Fall/Winter Capsule Wardrobe

Today, I want to share with you a tour of my Fall/Winter Capsule Wardrobe.  The hanging portion of my closet contains 27 pieces and I have 5 pairs of shoes, bringing the grand total to 32 pieces. This number does not include my winter coat, hat, gloves, scarves, undergarments, clothing I wear around the house, or accessories. All of my clothing fits into a 3 1/2′ X 6′ space. As a result, everything I need to get dressed is contained in one convenient location.

What is a capsule wardrobe, you ask?

According to Wikipedia, capsule wardrobe is a term coined by Susie Faux in the 1970s. According to Faux, a capsule wardrobe is a collection of a few essential items of clothing that don’t go out of fashion, such as skirts, trousers, and coats, which can then be augmented with seasonal pieces.  Courtney Carver, of project 333 has redefined the term capsule wardrobe, as: “A small collection of 33 items including clothing, jewelry, accessories and shoes that encourage you to wear your favorite things every day (not the trendiest things, the most stylish things, or the perfect things … your favorite things).”

I chose items for my capsule wardrobe based on comfort, ease of laundering, as well as how each item goes with the others. By choosing to stick to a color palette of black, gray and blue, everything matches everything else. By utilizing my fall/winter capsule wardrobe, I could literally get dressed in the dark.

Because I am a stay-at-home mom, my wardrobe fits my lifestyle. Therefore, my wardrobe is versatile enough that I would have enough clothing if I needed to go somewhere five days a week. Which, thankfully, as a certified homebody, I don’t.

Everyone has different needs when it comes to their wardrobe. You may need more or less than I do, in your fall/winter capsule wardrobe, and that’s okay.

You may need to own specific clothing for work, weekends, church, special events, meetings and exercising. As a result, your wardrobe may call for more items of clothing.

I simply want to share with you what I’ve found that works for me.
