You may have heard by now that our family of five (+ several pets) lives in a small house. 1,100 square feet, to be exact. And we plan to go even smaller by next year. Thankfully, when the time comes to move, I’ll be prepared. Because I have learned over the years that there are 10 things there’s absolutely no room for when you live in a small house.

10 Things There is No Room For When You Live in a Small House

1. Noise

This just goes without saying, but if you need to say it, please whisper! 5 people in a small house can get noisy, fast. Add a few friends and a couple of barking dogs and the noise level is intolerable.

Thank goodness for noise canceling headphones!

2. Unpleasant Smells

Boiled eggs, curry, wet dog, body odor, and farts. Yep, there’s just no room in a small house for these things!

3. Rudeness

In a small house, you’re sure to step on other people’s toes {literally}. Also, if you are a person who tends to yell a lot, do yourself {and those around you} a favor, and don’t bother trying to live in a small house.

4. Quiet Time

It is really difficult to carve out “alone time” when you live in a small house with 5 people and multiple pets. Even locking yourself in the (closet-sized) bathroom doesn’t work. Trust me, I’ve tried.

5. Arguing

If you are going to argue with someone when you live in a small house, you’ll need to do it in writing. Unless you don’t mind everyone else hearing (and possibly weighing-in).

6. Large Parties

The phrase “Two’s company, three’s a crowd, four’s a party” was probably made up by someone who lived in a small house.

7. Bulky Furniture

Trying to cram a sectional sofa into an 8′ by 8′ living room is like attempting to squeeze an elephant into a Volkswagen Beetle. I speak from experience here. About the couch, not the elephant.

8. Clutter

It’s a well-known fact, small houses lack storage. Which means you’ll have to learn to live with only the essentials if you decide to live small.

9. Messy People

The good news is, if you’ve taken care of #8, you won’t have much stuff with which to make messes. Although, some people seem to be able to create messes out of thin air. Have you met my 10-year-old?

10. Hobbies/Crafts

Sorry to say, you will have a really hard time trying to make craft beer, play the drums, or create custom pottery when you live in a small house.

While living in a small house has its drawbacks, I still believe the benefits far outweigh any inconveniences.

    Diane,
I hear you! I actually had my 10-year-old’s hearing checked because I thought maybe his volume was due to not hearing well. Turns out, his hearing is fine. He is just a really loud person who almost always uses his “outside” voice. 🙂

There’s a lot of noise in my 400 square foot house. My kids only seem to come with one volume level: loud!
